GLOBAL third-generation mobile phone operation 3 today received a boost from Standard & Poor's, which said the service should start to break even this year and move into profit as it attracts more customers, cost controls, and higher-than-average usage. Parent Hutchison Whampoa says 3 has three million British users and eight million worldwide.
'Tankan' points to fall in business sentiment
SENTIMENT among Japan's largest firms has taken a turn for the worse, the latest quarterly "tankan" survey revealed today. The deterioration will cast further doubt over the strength of the recovery in the world's secondlargest economy. The widely-watched guide showed that the index for large manufacturers sank to plus 14 last month from plus 22 in December. The fall exceeded analysts' expectations.
Microsoft accuses 117 of hi-tech identity theft
MICROSOFT has filed federal lawsuits in the US against 117 people, accusing them of a hi-tech form of identity theft known as "phishing". The lawsuits allege the use of mass email or popup adverts to coerce internet users into revealing personal information such as their bank account information, passwords or social security numbers.
Intel accepts Japan ruling but disputes charges
CHIP giant Intel has accepted the punishment recommended by Japan's fair trade agency, including a fine of several thousand dollars, on charges that it squeezed competitors out of the market by offering discounts to customers in exchange for exclusivity.
Intel and said it would change some of its business practices but that it still disagreed with the accusations.
