NSW: Family denies gang inveolment in teenager's death

SYDNEY, Feb 10 AAP - The family of a teenager shot dead at a crowded Sydney cinemalast week have denied the incident was gang-related.

Userph Rima, 16, a panelbeater from Hinchinbrook in the city's southwest, died afterbeing shot in the chest in the foyer of the Westfield shopping complex at Liverpool justafter 11pm (AEDT) on Friday.

A security guard was also hit in the shoulder by a ricocheting bullet during the attack.

Userph was the youngest of 10 children, and was described by his father Hussein Rimaas a quiet young man.

"(He was) no trouble, very quiet, very good man," Mr Rima told the Seven Network today.

Police said the trouble started when two groups of youths clashed over the allegedtheft of a mobile phone at the complex.

Homicide Detective Inspector Hans Rupp (Rupp) said the two groups had been watchingthe film Domestic Dispute when an argument erupted and spilled out into the foyer.

He said a "large group" attacked Userph, who was bashed and then shot.

But he denied the incident was gang-related.

"There is no evidence to suggest it was a gang-related incident. It's simply two groupsof young people who were watching a movie," Insp Rupp told reporters at Liverpool yesterday.

Userph's brother, Ali, also denied the incident was gang-related.

"He was on a date with his girlfriend and his mate with his girlfriend," he said.

"So I don't think that's a gang."

The teenager's sister, Samia, said she hoped his killers had to "pay" for what they did to him.

"Seeing him all bruised and bashed, I just hope they pay for what they did to him," she said.

A team of 25 detectives, called Strikeforce Watlington, is investigating the murderand has appealed for witnesses to come forward.
